Why do I visit fashion stores when I write about interiors? On every design week when in Milan or Paris, I love to visit a few stores that maybe at first glance are not that much within my niche. The clothes are of course beautifully made but what really attracts me is the interior. Fashion stores often offer a different way of looking at space. The interiors can be more experimental, with unusual materials, furniture or small details that can easily translate to a home. I am always interested and curious about those ideas and the small details I often discover. During my recent trip to Paris, I visited The Row for exactly that reason.
The Row
The Row was founded in 2006 by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. In September 2024, they opened their first Paris store at 1 Rue du Mont Thabor, close to Rue Saint-Honoré. The store is in a former restaurant, and much of the original interior was kept during the renovation, including the floors, columns and walls. During the work, a large stone arch, exposed pipes, stained glass and a weathered wooden pillar were also discovered.
The interior includes vintage and 20th-century furniture, including two Traineau chairs by Victor Courtray from 1940, which are still in the store. There is also a black coffee table with a graphic white pattern. In one of the fitting rooms, you can still see the Jean Prouvé metal sliding door, while the window blinds by Lilou Marquand are also still there, Did you spot the small details on the blind mechanism! There is also a small coffee bar in the store, which was originally part of the former restaurant.
