One of my most cherished press trip was a small trip to Copenhagen and Sweden on invitation of Vipp who invited me to experience two of their Vipp hotels. Earlier this year Vipp opened the doors to a very different kind of guesthouse, set inside a 13th-century palazzo in the heart of Brescia, decorated with frescoes from 1750.
The project was the seventh entry in Vipp’s guesthouse portfolio and was created as a liveable installation by Danish interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard. Unlike a conventional hotel, Vipp’s guesthouses explore different architectural settings and turn them into one-of-a-kind places to stay. Palazzo Monti was one of these temporary pop-up experiences.
Inside Palazzo Monti
Palazzo Monti itself is an art house founded by Edoardo Monti. Since 2017, its residency programme has welcomed artists from Italy and abroad, working across painting, photography, sculpture, visual arts and design. According to Vipp, more than 200 artists from 50 countries had been welcomed by Palazzo Monti, with each artist invited to leave behind a work created during their stay.
For the Vipp project, three rooms on the first floor were transformed into a contemporary suite. A hallway, salon and bedroom with an adjacent walk in closet and bathroom were furnished with Vipp furniture and lighting, set against the existing ornamentation and artworks of the palazzo. The combination of the historic surroundings and Vipp’s design continues into the ground-floor kitchen and dining area. Here, Julie Cloos Mølsgaard placed a matte black V1 modular kitchen island.
The kitchen sits on a floor of locally crafted jade tiles, while green details throughout the interior refer to the region’s interior style from the 1600s. The historic ornamentation remains visible throughout the rooms, while Vipp’s industrial design forms the contemporary layer of the interior.
A Vipp guesthouse for one month
The experience extended beyond the rooms themselves. Guests stayed as the only guest in the space, with access to the communal area and the artists taking part in Palazzo Monti’s residency programme. Vipp Palazzo Monti was therefore not simply another hotel interior, but part of Vipp’s ongoing guesthouse concept of temporary places that bring the Vipp universe into very different architectural settings.
