For La Casa di Marmo, architect Hannes Peer worked together with marble maker Margraf to create an underground installation beneath the garden of historic villa Casa Maveri in Milan’s Brera district, entirely made from marble and stone. Rather than using marble only as a finish, the material becomes the walls, floors, ceilings and other architectural elements of the space.
As always the experience begins in the garden, where a narrow staircase leads down below ground. You might recognize the setting from this previous article : Beyond the Surface by SolidNature | Milan Design week 2023 At the centre of the installation is a patio with a reflective basin, where water falls from above and natural light enters through a vertical opening. Santafiora marble in soft sand and warm earth tones is combined with onyx, quartz, agate and translucent stones, some illuminated from within. Different types of marble are layered together, creating varied patterns and surfaces throughout the space.
From the patio, the installation continues into a conversation pit, with a softly illuminated wall of onyx, quartz and semi-precious stones behind the seating area. On the opposite side is the kitchen, with a wall made from almost a thousand marble tesserae, followed by a bedroom where the marble continues throughout the space.
