When visiting Garde Hvalsøe in Copenhagen last June, I spent some time exploring their showroom and getting a closer look at the way they work with natural materials, and their beautiful precise detailing. Among the many kitchens and Cabinets on display, one cabinet stood out with its clean lines and calm, minimalist character. It immediately gave me a Japanese design feeling. Recognizing the cabinet from a visit at the showroom of Paola Lenti in Milan earlier, I loved to have a closer look and learn more of the makers.
The Koshido Cabinet and OEO Studio
Designed in collaboration with Danish OEO Studio, the Koshido Cabinet was originally created as a bespoke piece for a residence in Tokyo. OEO, known internationally for its work across interiors, architecture, and product design, often bridges Scandinavian design principles with a subtle Asian sensibility. With their Copenhagen base and project office in Tokyo, the studio works with narratives rooted in culture, place, and tradition, something that becomes visible in the Koshido Cabinet’s calm proportions and thoughtful detailing.
The piece reflects a dialogue between Japanese aesthetics and Scandinavian simplicity, brought together through Garde Hvalsøe’s craftsmanship and material focus. It’s a great example of how the two design worlds can meet in an understated and harmonious way.

Bespoke kitchens and cabinets
During 3daysofdesign, the Garde Hvalsøe Garde showroom hosted Deltag, a joint presentation with De La Espada that focused on craftsmanship, material presence, and a slower way of experiencing design. The space was curated with a quiet sense of hospitality with pieces by Neri & Hu and Manuel Aires Mateus were shown alongside Garde Hvalsøe’s own work, creating a calm dialogue between form and material. The Koshido Cabinet was part of this setting, and within the softened atmosphere of Deltag, its minimal, almost Japanese character felt even more pronounced.
I really enjoyed visiting Garde Hvalsøe and seeing the different kitchens and cabinets, all great examples of Danish craftsmanship. Pictured above is the Hoelgaard kitchen in beautiful oak, a real piece of furniture for the home and of course I love the minimal styling with different ceramics. Here are some more images of the store because next to the different kitchens, beautiful wardrobes and especially the hanging cabinets with its beautiful details really caught my eye.
